Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho: Eden Hazard can become world’s best player
Eden Hazard signs a new five-and-a-half year deal with Chelsea
Jose Mourinho says Eden Hazard can become one of the best players in the world after the Chelsea forward signed a new five-and-a-half year deal on Thursday.
The Belgium international ended speculation surrounding his future amid reported interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain by extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2021.
Hazard has been one of the driving forces behind the west London side’s Premier League title challenge this season, scoring an impressive 13 times in 36 appearances in all competitions.
Speaking to Chelsea’s website after Hazard penned his new long-term deal, Mourinho said: “I am very happy that Eden has signed a new contract. It shows he believes in the club’s coaching staff and players to help him become the best player in the world.
“He is already a top player and his evolution has been fantastic. He is still very young and he can become the best.”
Hazard joined Chelsea in a reported £32m deal from Ligue 1 outfit Lille in 2012 after he was previously linked with their rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.
The 24-year-old, who is the reigning PFA young player of the year, has scored 43 goals in 150 appearances for Chelsea since his big-money move to the Blues.
Chelsea’s next game is their Champions League last-16 first-leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.
