Could Man United captain Wayne Rooney fight at Wrestlemania?

WWE wrestler Wade Barrett wants to fight Wayne Rooney in New Orleans on 6 April

Wayne Rooney is in hot water with WWE wrestler Wade Barrett after the Preston North End fan called out the Manchester United striker on Twitter.

The 29-year-old striker took a tumble to win a late penalty as the Red Devils eased to a 3-1 victory over the League One side at Deepdale on Monday.

However, Barrett couldn’t get over the incident and the Preston supporter took to social media to criticise Rooney for his dive against the Lilywhites last night.

The United captain didn’t take long to reply, though, as the England international called on support from Barrett’s rival wrestler, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Unhappy with the imbalance in any potential bout, Barrett recruited Preston captain Kevin Davies for his tag team before he urged WWE chief executive Vince McMahon to set up the fight for Wrestlemania in New Orleans on 7 April.

When a wrestling fan suggested that Austin wouldn’t be happy with Rooney for undergoing a hair transplant and not accepting the baldness, the 50-year-old came to life on Twitter.

And Rooney didn’t argue back, perhaps wisely agreeing with the former wrestler.
