Everton 0 Liverpool 0: Steven Gerrard praises ‘excellent’ Jordon Ibe
Steven Gerrard believes Jordon Ibe has a big Liverpool future
Steven Gerrard heaped praise on “excellent” Jordon Ibe after the winger scooped the man-of-the-match award following a goalless Merseyside derby.
The 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the Liverpool starting line-up ahead of Daniel Sturridge, who made his return from injury at Anfield last weekend.
It was a sensational performance from him and he’s got a big future
However, Ibe justified his place as the England Under-21 international terrorised Everton full-back Bryan Oviedo throughout the local clash.
In fact, the Liverpool teenager came closest to breaking the deadlock in a disappointing derby encounter, hitting the woodwork with a long-range strike in the first.
When asked about Ibe’s potential by Sky Sports, Gerrard said: “Both sides cancelled each other out first. We were looking for that spark but it never came and both defences were on top.
“Jordon Ibe was fantastic and he only found out he was playing yesterday. He was man of the match, it was a sensational performance from him and he’s got a big future.”
Gerrard, who has scored 10 times in 33 Merseyside derbies, is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after he agreed a deal with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.
And the Liverpool skipper, who made his 700th Reds appearance against Bolton in the FA Cup mid-week, spoke about his affection for the fixture and trips to Goodison Park.
Gerrard added: “We can’t have too many complaints. I love playing here, Goodison Park is a great stadium and I have some wonderful memories here. I will miss the Merseyside derby but maybe there’s one more left in the Europa League.”
Liverpool are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who face West Ham United at Upton Park in Sunday’s late kick-off.
