Gary Neville backs Manchester United to finish in the top four
Gary Neville has backed Manchester United to join Arsenal in the top four at the end of the season.
The Red Devils are currently in third place and a point ahead of Arsenal after a 3-1 win against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Because of the run they’ve got, in terms of no European commitments, I do think they got enough
United have risen up the Premier League table after losing just one game in 13 top-flight outings, boosting their hopes of an immediate return to the Champions League.
Former Red Devils defender Neville reckons the lack of European competition this term will prove vital for Louis van Gaal’s side in the final couple of months.
“Resilience is a quality every manager wants to bring to a club and when Van Gaal came to United I expected really attacking football and high levels of possession – which has been evident,” Neville told Sky Sports News HQ.
“I was also expecting wingers I suppose, playing the old Dutch 4-3-3 system, so there’s a lot of things I did expect that we’ve not seen yet. But the foundation is there through resilience and not conceding goals.
“If they were conceding goals like they were against Leicester at the start of the season I’d be concerned about them finishing in the top four.
“I think because of the run they’ve got, in terms of no European commitments, I do think they got enough, with Arsenal, to finish in the top four, along with Chelsea and City.”
Van Gaal’s men are just five points behind second-place Manchester City following their win against the Foxes.
United face League Two side Cambridge United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils make the potentially tricky trip to top-six chasing West Ham United at Upton Park next Sunday.
