Harry Kane: Tottenham must finish above Arsenal to secure top four

Harry Kane discusses Tottenham Hotspur's top-four prospects

Harry Kane is urging his Tottenham team-mates to believe in themselves to make the dream of finishing in the top-four, and above Arsenal, a reality.

Despite going behind to an early Mesut Ozil goal, the 21-year-old inspired his side to a 2-1 victory in Saturday’s north London derby, scoring both goals to add to his impressive tally this season.

The result took Spurs above their bitter rivals in the Premier League table, and Kane believes they will clinch a top-four spot if Spurs finish ahead of Arsenal come May.

“If we finish above Arsenal, of course we’ve got a great chance of finishing in the top-four because Arsenal have been up there for so long,” Kane told Sky Sports.

The red half of north London have enjoyed a recent dominance, in terms of final league standings, over the team from White Hart Lane.

Gerry Francis was the last man to lead Spurs to a higher league finish over Arsenal – which happened two decades ago in the 1994/1995 season.

Significantly, Arsene Wenger has never finished below Tottenham, and never below fourth, but Spurs’ top scorer believes that finishing higher than the Gunners will ensure Champions League qualification.

He said: “You’d like to think if you’re above Arsenal, then you’d be in the top-four.

“But the Premier League is a strange league sometimes and you never know what is going to happen.”

Kane’s performances in recent weeks have drawn much media praise, keeping the more high-profile Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor entrenched on the bench.

The England Under-21 forward is not getting carried away with Saturday’s result, but hopes that as long as his side are focused, they can achieve their aim.

“There seems to be an opportunity every season, and then come the end it doesn’t happen,” Kane said, “we’ve got to focus and do what we can do.”
