Andy Hinchcliffe says Louis van Gaal will do whatever is necessary to get Manchester United back into the Champions League.

The 63-year-old Red Devils manager has been criticised in recent weeks for his side’s unattractive performances, despite losing just twice in 16 Premier League games.

United’s fifth defeat of the season came at Swansea City on Saturday after Ki Sung-yueng and Bafetimbi Gomis overturned Ander Herrera’s opener to seal a 2-1 win at Liberty Stadium.

Despite increased pressure on the Dutchman following a surprise defeat in Wales, former Manchester City defender Hinchcliffe reckons Van Gaal won’t be too affected by recent criticism of his team.

“He is getting criticism over their style of play. Van Gaal has gone in there to get them into the top four this season. I don’t think he was ever convinced that they were going to win the title,” Hinchcliffe told Sky Sports.

“They have to get Champions League football, it has to be the end game. I don’t think he is too worried. He has the experience and his CV is very strong. He’ll do what is necessary to get them into the top-four position.”

United are a point ahead of fifth-placed Southampton, but the Red Devils face Newcastle United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Everton over the next two months.

Van Gaal’s men have won just one of their last six away games in the Premier League.
