Jamie Carragher runs rule on Liverpool’s ‘excellent’ defence
Jamie Carragher heaps praise on Liverpool's defensive trio
Jamie Carragher has warned Dejan Lovren that he faces a tough time dislodging Liverpool’s excellent back-three.
The Reds set up a FA Cup fifth-round clash at Crystal Palace on 14 February after Liverpool edged to a 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Macron Stadium on Wednesday night.
Although Eidur Gudjohnsen did manage to beat Simon Mignolet from the penalty spot, former Liverpool centre-half Carragher praised Emre Can, Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel.
“Emre Can & Sakho’s performances in Lfc’s back 3 of late have been excellent which has helped the defensive record, they are totally different players but add a nice balance in a back 3 with Skrtel in between them,” Carragher wrote on Twitter.
German youngster Can teed up Raheem Sterling to level in the 85th minute before Philippe Coutinho netted an 91st-minute winner to seal a 2-1 win in the fourth-round replay.
Liverpool have conceded just three goals in their last seven games in all competitions, and Carragher reckons £20m summer signing Lovren will struggle to earn a starting spot if Liverpool’s defence continue to maintain their impressive balance.
“That’s a big problem for Dejan Loveren as he would only look comfortable in the centre of that system hence why Rodgers brought Johnson on at Chelsea,” Carragher continued.
“The 20 million pound signing was supposed to eradicate the defensive issues that hasn’t quite happend but he will get an opportunity at some stage but the current back 3 are going to take some shifting.”
Can moved to Liverpool in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen, whilst Sakho was restored to the starting line-up after an injury-hit start to the season.
