Jamie Redknapp believes Geoffrey Kondogbia was the difference at The Emirates after Monaco were 3-1 winners against Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The France Under-21 international broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a long-range strike, which Per Mertesacker deflected past Gunners goalkeeper David Ospina.

That [Geoffrey Kondogbia] is exactly the type of player that Arsenal need to sign

The 22-year-old won nine tackles in midfield as he gave Monaco the platform to kick on and seal a comfortable win thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Redknapp highlighted Kondogbia as the type of player that Arsene Wenger needs to add to his starting line-up, despite the recent emergence of Francis Coquelin.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “Konogbia was incredible tonight. He was organised, disciplined and let his other team-mates play. He was the difference.

“I look at the Arsenal side, and that is where they’ve been going wrong. That is exactly the type of player that Arsenal need to sign.”

Redknapp added: “They stumbled across Coquelin in midfield against Manchester City, thinking now this is the answer. They took him off.

“They ended up with a midfield of Cazorla, Rosicky and Oxlade-Chamberlain – they couldn’t tackle a hot dinner.”

The French midfielder has scored two goals and made one assist in 18 appearances in all competitions this season.

Earlier this season, former Arsenal defender Perry Groves told The Sport Review that Wenger should sign Kondogbia, likening the Monaco midfielder to Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.

“I’d probably go for a player at Monaco called Geoffrey Kondogbia,” Groves said.

“He is a French international about 21. He played against us during a pre-season tournament at The Emirates and he is nearest I’ve seen to Patrick Vieira.
“He is the kind of player we [Arsenal] need.”
