Redknapp tells Liverpool boss to unleash ‘exceptional’ Sturridge
Jamie Redknapp wants Brendan Rodgers to start Daniel Sturridge at Goodison Park
Jamie Redknapp believes “exceptional” Daniel Sturridge can make the difference in the Merseyside derby if Brendan Rodgers starts the Liverpool striker.
The Reds forward scored on his return from injury after he was introduced as a late substitute in the 2-0 victory over West Ham United last weekend.
There comes a time when you’ve got to take the risk and play him
Rodgers was expected to start Sturridge against Bolton Wanderers mid-week but the Northern Irishman opted to use the England international as an option from the bench.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp reckons the time is right to unleash the 25-year-old, who scored against the Toffees at Goodison Park last season.
“Of course, he’s got the dilemma of whether or not he should start his striker on Saturday but I think he’s got to go for it,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“There’s no tougher game to come back into but Sturridge is such an exceptional player that I believe he can make the difference.
“There comes a time when you’ve got to take the risk and play him. If he feels fit and sharp, Rodgers has got to unleash him.”
Raheem Sterling has done an amazing job while Sturridge was out injured and Liverpool fans have to be thankful to him for that. But, by moving Sterling into a deeper role, you look at that Liverpool side now and there’s so much pace going through it.
Sturridge hasn’t featured for the Merseyside outfit since a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in late August.
The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward has scored 33 goals in 47 Premier League appearances following his £12m switch to Anfield from Stamford Bridge just over two years ago.
