Jose Mourinho runs the rule over Chelsea’s season so far

Jose Mourinho believes that his Chelsea side have a clearer philosophy this season

Jose Mourinho believes that Chelsea’s biggest improvement this season has been the addition of an “identity” to their game.

The Blues finished third in the Premier League in the Portuguese coach’s first season back at Stamford Bridge as they ended the campaign without a trophy.

But the west London side have dramatically improved this term and pulled seven points clear of defending champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table at the weekend.

Mourinho’s men are also through to the League Cup final and the knock-out phase of the Champions League.

The winning team with very good quality in its game is something more

And although a portion of Chelsea’s improvement can be attributed the the signings of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis last summer, Mourinho feels that his team now have a clearer philosophy.

“Last year we did well, but not well enough to win silverware,” Mourinho told BT Sport ahead of Chelsea’s game against Everton on Wednesday, which is live on the channel.

“The players that stay in the team from season to season give us the stability and the spine, the structure of what we want.

“In my opinion we did good work by bringing in a couple of players to improve the team and with more maturity, a little bit more solutions, the team had a revolution, not just in the results, because in the results I think we have a few more points than we had last season, but last season we had a good Premier League, too.

“More than that is the identity of our game, the quality of our game, the beauty of our game.

“And this is a very important step, because as you know a winning team will be always a winning team, but the winning team with very good quality in its game is something more.”

Chelsea host Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday night after their 2-1 win over Aston Villa at the weekend.

Jose Mourinho is an ambassador for BT Sport. Watch Chelsea v Everton exclusively live on BT Sport 1 from 19:00 GMT on Wednesday evening.
