Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the Europa League after on-loan Chelsea forward Mohamed Salah helped fire Fiorentina to a 2-0 victory in Florence.

Spurs, who face the Blues in Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley, fell behind in the 54th minute after Mario Gomez beat Hugo Lloris, before Egyptian Salah sealed the Serie A side’s passage with 19 minutes remaining.

Here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order after the north London club made their European exit at the last-32 stage.

Spurs legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) isn’t happy with Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics as Spurs struggle in Florence: “Tottenham’s high-line without any pressure on the player in possession is a recipe for disaster. Basic defending.”

The former England international is compelled to take to Twitter again after Roberto Soldado misses a sitter: “Not sure I’ve ever seen a player as bereft of confidence as Soldado. Poor bugger!”

Things take a turn for the worse in Italy, and former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) isn’t impressed with Tottenham’s defending: “Spurs utterly shocking defensively tonight 2-0 down”

Former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) tries to provide some humour at the expense of Arsenal: “Spurs out of Europe in sympathy for @piersmorgan @IanJamesPoulter to overcome their depression on Arsenal loss to Monaco”

Finally, former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) believes Pochettino’s side let themselves down against Fiorentina: “#Tottenham is so much better than what we have seen today! They should’ve started with their star players. #mmlove”
