Liverpool must maintain momentum, says Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho wants Liverpool to continue to be consistent ahead of Besiktas clash

Philippe Coutinho has urged Liverpool to maintain their current momentum ahead of Thursday’s clash against Besiktas in the Europa League.

The Reds have lost just two games in 17 games in all competitions following their exit from the Champions League in December.

In fact, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games, whilst Simon Mignolet has kept four clean sheets in his last five outings.

We have to keep on doing the work we have been doing until now and continue to be consistent

Brazil international Coutinho wants Liverpool to continue their impressive form against their Turkish opponents in the first leg of their last-32 tie at Anfield on Thursday.

“It’s important to maintain the momentum. The team has been doing what the coach has been requesting and everybody is trying their best on the field,” Coutinho told Liverpool’s website.

“Everybody defends when we do not have the ball and I think that has been important in helping to allow the team to play well, so we have to continue like this.

“We know at the beginning of the season it was not like this with our form, but we have to continue as we have been and aspire to achieve good things like trophies.

“We have good chances [in the competitions]. The team has been playing well, a few good players have returned from injury and the team is united.

“It will be a great game against Besiktas and everybody is looking forward to it. The Europa League is a big competition and I know they are a good team, so they’ll be two great matches.

“But we have to keep on doing the work we have been doing until now and continue to be consistent. We have been playing well and we will have to do everything we can to go through to the next round.”

Coutinho has scored two goals and has made four assists in 22 Premier League appearances this season, proving to be one of the Merseyside club’s standout performers.

The five-time European champions rewarded the South American playmaker for his impressive form with a new five-and-a-half year contract earlier this month.

Coutinho joined Liverpool in a £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in January 2013.
