Man United 3 Cambridge Utd 0: Player ratings as Juan Mata stars

Player ratings as Manchester United set up a fifth-round FA Cup clash with Preston North End

By Sid Selant

Manchester United

David De Gea A very quiet night for the United keeper. Cambridge never troubled him. Solid display from his defenders, too. 5/10

Paddy McNair The right-back had a sound game. Great run and pass to start the move for Mata’s goal on 25 minutes. Consistently kept the ball well and got into several good positions. Will have done his confidence no harm at all. 7

Chris Smalling Rarely troubled at the back. Got involved in the attacks as often as he could. 7

Marcos Rojo Played left-back and got his first goal for the Red Devils. It was a simple header from a Van Persie chip. 7

Jonny Evans Comfortable evening. Did his job well and played from the back. 7

Angel Di Maria Started on the left-side of midfield and was always involved in United’s attacks. He delivered the cross for the first goal. Substituted after 71 minutes. 7

Daley Blind Played in the middle of the midfield and distributed the ball well to both flanks. Got involved in the final half as much as possible. 7

Wayne Rooney Rooney started on the right side of the midfield trio but moved around. Got onto the ball as much as possible and was always at the centre of the attacks. Had a couple of chances. 7

Juan Mata (Man of the match) United best player on the night. His creativity and craft was too much for Cambridge. Got his deserved goal and could have scored more. 8

Marouane Fellani Had one of his better games for United. Played behind the striker in an unusual role. Linked up well with Ronney, Mata and Van Persie. He headed down for Mata to score and was a constant aerial threat. 7.5

Robin van Persie The Dutch star had the best opportunities in the game. On another night, he could have had a hat-trick but his lack of form showed. He wanted to get his season started again with a goal. In the end tried too hard. 6

James Wilson Netted United’s third of the night. 7

Cambridge United

Chris Dunn Reasonably good night for the keeper. Conceded three goals which were not his fault. Made a couple of good saves to deny Van Persie and Rooney. 7

Richard Tait– Played at right-back and was constantly up against Di Maria and Rojo. More defending than attacking. 6

Michael Nelson Kept busy at the back with United constantly threatening. Reasonably sound game at the back. Altthough could have done better for one or two of the goals. 5

Josh Coulson Pace and the atmosphere at Old Trafford was too much. Had to do a lot of defending. 5

Greg Taylor Spent most of the night defending. Nothing much as an attacking force. Kept busy by McNair runs. 4

Ryan Donaldson Tried to get involved in the game but the class of Di Maria and Rojo kept him busy all night. Gave the ball away too many times. 5

Cameron McGeehan Played in the middle of the park and the game by passed him. Too much time in his own half defending rather than creating for his teams attacks. Had a great opportunity for a consolation goal in added time. 5.5

Tom Champion Did well in the middle of the park. Tried passing and tackling. Overwhelmed wth the atmosphere and players around him. 5.5

Luke Chadwick Former United player tried to have an impact. A red at heart and was substituted just after the break, got a standing ovation for the Old Trafford faithful. 5

Robbie Simpson Did not get any joy in front of goal. Unfortunately the best chance fell to his partner. United defence was unbeatable and not much creativity or supply. 6

Tom Elliot Best chance of the game fell to the striker in the first minute. Through on goal and many believe should have buried the ball into the net. Rest of the game was a chasing game. 5
