Peter Schmeichel believes David De Gea wants to see how Manchester United’s season pans out before the goalkeeper signs a new long-term deal.

The Spain international is yet to put pen to paper on a lucrative new contract despite the shot stopper having less than 18 months remaining on his current United deal.

I suspect that he’s just having a look at how this season is going to pan out

De Gea has been heavily linked with Champions League holders Real Madrid in recent months amid reports Los Blancos want the United man to replace Spain captain Iker Casillas.

Schmeichel, who won five Premier League titles during his United career, is optimistic that the 24-year-old will commit his long-term future to the 20-time English champions.

“I hope he will sign but today’s footballers don’t decide on their own,” Schmeichel told the Daily Star. “They’ve got agents to advise them and I don’t know what kind of advice he’s getting. I suspect that he’s just having a look at how this season is going to pan out.

“All I know is what I read from the media but the only thing I really can say is I hope he will sign. I hope he gives everybody that bit of good news because it would have another effect on many other future dealings with players so hopefully he will sign.

“I have no idea what he’s like or how he likes Manchester or how he likes it here. You could excuse him for thinking it would be better to go back but I have no idea what his thinking is and at the end of the day it’s probably the advice he gets from his agent that will make the difference between what he’s doing.”

De Gea won the Premier League title in 2013 after the goalkeeper joined United in a £18m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The former los Rojiblancos man has made 158 appearances for United during his four-year stay at the Manchester club.
