Man Utd legend unconcerned by Wayne Rooney’s lack of goals

Peter Schmeichel believes Wayne Rooney's lack of goals is a natural consequence of his midfield role

Peter Schmeichel isn’t overly concerned by Wayne Rooney’s goal drought as the Manchester United legend believes the striker’s responsibilities have changed this season.

The 29-year-old Red Devils captain scored his first goal in 2015 from the penalty spot against Preston North End, ending a run of nine appearances without finding the net.

His responsibilities have changed from last season, as long as someone scores, it doesn’t matter really

Since adopting his new midfield role, the statistics have been grim, and he has only managed a single shot on target in seven Premier League games since the turn of the year.

His influence from central midfield has diminished in an attacking sense, but Schmeichel still thinks Rooney’s performances have been impressive.

“I don’t mind that he isn’t scoring. He has been absolutely fantastic this season. He has been asked to play in a different position and he is doing that. He is leading the team as well,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.

“To score goals, you have to be close to the goal all the time. Where he is playing now, he isn’t that close to goal for much of the game.

“The thing is, if you’re not scoring every week, you won’t get that many opportunities. He needs to keep getting into those positions.

“His responsibilities have changed from last season, as long as someone scores, it doesn’t matter who really. We’re used to Wayne scoring a lot of goals, but it has been from a different position.”

Louis van Gaal has struggled to get the best out of his strikers this season, and only Robin van Persie has hit double figures with ten goals.
