Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal confirms plan to sign midfielder
Louis van Gaal says that he wants to sign a midfielder this summer to help balance his Manchester United side
Louis van Gaal has confirmed that signing a new midfielder will be the Manchester United manager’s top priority in the summer.
The Red Devils boss is being forced to play United captain Wayne Rooney in midfield as the 63-year-old attempts to strike the right balance in his side.

The 20-time English champions have been linked with a host of top midfielders in recent months, including Juventus duo Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal, as well as Roma star Kevin Strootman.
Van Gaal, who was appointed as United manager last May, admitted he needed to find a midfielder capable of blending with his creative talents like Angel di Maria.
Asked if signing a new midfielder is his top priority, Van Gaal told United’s website: “Of course, of course.
“I am looking for balance and I need balance in midfield. When I play with [Adnan] Januzaj and Di Maria in the midfield positions, then you need a certain balance for that kind of creative player.
“So, when you have these creative players, and also [Radamel] Falcao and [Robin] van Persie are creative players, then you have four creative players and you have to look for balance in your team.”
The Red Devils spent a combined £45m on midfielders Daley Blind and Ander Herrera in last summer’s transfer window, although the Spaniard has barely featured under Van Gaal.
Former United manager David Moyes signed Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini in a £27.5m deal from Everton in 2013, but the 26-year-old has struggled to impress at Old Trafford.
