Man United transfers: Mats Hummels can’t defend, claims Owen Hargreaves
Owen Hargreaves questions whether Mats Hummels would be a good signing for Manchester United
Owen Hargreaves has told Manchester United not to bother trying to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund – because he “can’t defend”.
The 26-year-old centre-half has been heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his defensive options at the club.
Van Gaal’s United are thought to be lining up a big-money bid for the defender in the summer after a January transfer failed to materialise.
However, former United midfielder Hargreaves does not believe that Hummels would be a sensible addition for the Red Devils and would rather see them bolster their squad with an out-and-out defender.
“He’s a super, super ball-playing centre-back but I don’t think he can defend, he’s too slow,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“He’s Franz Beckenbauer, the new version, a super passer but I think that if I’m Manchester United I want Vidic, I want Kompany. I think he’s a nice football player, he’s easy on the eye, but United need somebody physical, a presence.
“He’s the captain of Borussia Dortmund, they’re last in the Bundesliga. Is that the measuring stick for Manchester United? I’m not so sure.”
Hummels has scored one goal in 11 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund so far this season. He helped Joachim Low’s Germany side win the World Cup in Brazil last summer.
The Germany international defender has scored 21 goals in 240 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund following his move from Bayern Munich in 2007.
