Man United transfers: Memphis Depay likely to leave PSV, says Phillip Cocu
Phillip Cocu says Manchester United target Memphis Depay can be as good as Arjen Robben
Manchester United target Memphis Depay is likely to leave PSV Eindhoven in the summer transfer window, manager Phillip Cocu has admitted.
The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to the 20-time English champions following the appointment of his former national manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
It’s unfortunate that he might leave in the summer
The 21-year-old is the Eredivise’s top goal-scorer after the forward netted 15 times in 19 league appearances this season, as well as making three assists for his team-mates.
While Cocu believes Depay has the talent to emulate Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben, the PSV manager reluctantly accepted that the Dutch club face a fight to keep their stay at Philips Stadium.
“I think he can be as good as Robben,” Cocu is quoted as saying by Goal during his media conference on Wednesday.
“They are different players but they are both fast and have a good shot and both always have the desire to improve; neither player hides from training, which is a good sign for Depay.
“It’s unfortunate that he might leave in the summer but, on the other hand, we must be proud as a club because we have raised him.
“At some point, it becomes clear that he is ready for the next step and, yes, I think he’s going to leave PSV after this season.”
Depay became the youngest Dutchman to score a goal at a World Cup after the winger scored against Australia in the group stage.
The PSV youngster, who was named on the three-man shortlist for the World Cup’s best young player award, came off the bench to score against Chile in their final group-stage fixture.
