Man United’s Louis van Gaal ready for big top-four battle

Louis van Gaal eyes top-four finish

Louis van Gaal says he expects Manchester United to face a “big battle” to secure a top-four finish.

The Red Devils moved ahead of Southampton into third place after a 3-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 20-time English champions are four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who face Paul Lambert’s struggling Aston Villa side at The Emirates this afternoon.

And United boss Van Gaal is under no illusion to the size of the task facing his Red Devils side in a bid to seal an immediate return to the Champions League.

“I have already said in press conferences [that the race for a Champions League spot could go to the final weekend] because that is a big battle,” Van Gaal told his post-match media conferences.

United are just five points behind second-placed Manchester City after the defending champions drew 1-1 with league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s late kick-off.

Van Gaal, who was appointed as United manager in May, is hoping the Red Devils can catch current front-runners Chelsea and Manchester City.

“We are [five] points off Manchester City, for example,” Van Gaal added. “So I believe it shall be a big battle in the end.”
