Carragher: Man United playing Rooney like defensive midfielder
Jamie Carragher discusses where Louis van Gaal is deploying Wayne Rooney
Jamie Carragher says Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney played more like a defensive midfielder than a playmaker during 1-1 draw at West Ham United.
The Red Devils skipper was deployed on the right-hand side of midfield but the 29-year-old was limited to just one shot at Upton Park on Sunday evening.
Rooney has been used in a deeper role for the past couple of months, sparking an eight-game goal drought for the United talisman.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher can’t understand why Van Gaal persisted with Rooney in a midfield position as United chased an equaliser against the Hammers.
“I was watching Wayne Rooney today, the position he is in is not right,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think he touched the ball in the opposition’s box, if he did, it was once or twice. He is playing almost like a defensive midfielder.
“I admire the change when they went direct, but why isn’t he putting Rooney of the front-men, getting in those positions? Trying to create and score goals.
“The two strikers had less touches that the goalkeeper.”
West Ham’s makeshift centre-half Cheikhou Kouyate broke the deadlock in the 55th minute after a close-range finish from a Hammers corner.
The Hammers were denied a first victory over the Red Devils since 2007 after Daley Blind scored an added-time winner to rescue a point for the visitors.
