The 29-year-old has just under three months remaining of his season-long loan move from Monaco after the Colombia international completed a blockbuster switch to Old Trafford on deadline day last summer.
If he gets back to what he used to be, he is someone who should get an opportunity at United
However, Falcao has struggled to recreate his prolific La Liga form in the Premier League following his return from a serious knee injury, scoring just four times in 16 top-flight games.
While Schmeichel admitted the former Atletico Madrid striker has been a disappointment at Old Trafford, the United legend suspects Falcao still isn’t 100 per cent following his cruciate knee ligament injury.
“We knew when he came that he had this injury and his reaction to the injury, that has been the exciting part. Unfortunately for him, he has had more injuries,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports News.
“I don’t think they’ve communicated anything about his progress – is he where he should be now or does it take another two, three or four months?
“I’m sure if they feel he can be 100 per cent next season, I’m sure he is the kind of player Manchester United would love to add permanently to the squad. He has proven that he is a fantastic goal scorer but he has been very unlucky during this injury hell over the past 18 months.
“If he gets back to what he used to be, he is someone who should get an opportunity at United.”
Falcao joined United with a huge reputation after he scored 41 times in 51 goals in the Portuguese Super Liga before he netted 52 goals in 68 La Liga appearances.
The Red Devils striker has been linked with a move to the club’s bitter rivals Liverpool at the end of the season, as well as Champions League holders Real Madrid.
