Phil Neville: Louis van Gaal doesn’t know his best Man United side
Phil Neville wants Louis van Gaal to sacrifice one of his strikers
Louis van Gaal still doesn’t know his best Manchester United side, according to former Red Devils defender Phil Neville.
The 20-time English champions struggled to a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Van Gaal’s side have been unconvincing in their past two games after Daley Blind scored an added-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw at West Ham United at the weekend.
Former United star Neville reckons Van Gaal may need to sacrifice Radamel Falcao or Robin van Persie in a bid to find a more balanced system for United.
Neville wrote on BreatheSport: “Utd poor v burnley and lucky to win – don’t think LVG knows his best team/system yet – maybe he will have to sacrifice one of the front men to find the right balance for the team.”
The hosts made the breakthrough in the sixth minute through substitute Chris Smalling before in-form Burnley striker Danny Ings levelled just six minutes later.
The United centre-half remarkably restored the home side’s lead on the stroke of half-time before Robin van Persie netted a late penalty to seal three points.
Van Gaal’s side are in third place and two points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal in the race for a place in next season’s Champions League.
