Philippe Coutinho can be Liverpool’s special player, says Neymar
Neymar backs Philippe Coutinho to become a 'very special player'
Neymar says Philippe Coutinho can be Liverpool’s star man following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
The Uruguay international joined the Catalan side in a £75m deal in the summer after spending three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.
When he has the ball at his feet, he can make things happen for himself and he can make things happen for other players
Brendan Rodgers’ side have struggled to cope without their former goal-scoring machine, who found the net 82 times for the Reds.
However, for the first time this season, Liverpool have started to produce excellent form, and Neymar feels Coutinho has the qualities to step into the gap left by Suarez and drive the club forward.
“We have been good friends since we were 16. Not only is he a fantastic player, he is a good guy to have in the dressing room, always positive and making jokes,” Neymar told the Daily Mirror.
“I think, since Luis joined us at Barcelona, Liverpool have not had that one player they can look to for that special moment.
“Couto can be that player for them, I’m sure.
“When he has the ball at his feet, he can make things happen for himself and he can make things happen for other players. He is a very special player.”
Coutinho has scored 11 goals in 82 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Inter Milan in 2013 for £8.5m.
The Brazilian recently committed his future to the club when he signed a new long-term contract that would keep him at Anfield until June 2020.
His performances over the last two months have helped Liverpool to a seven-match unbeaten in the Premier League and they now sit just four points behind the top four.
Coutinho’s heroics also helped his side come from behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 on Tuesday night.
His stunning late winner at the Macron Stadium sealed the win and sent his side into the FA Cup fifth round.
