Rodgers delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Besiktas clash
Steven Gerrard is not fit for Liverpool's Europa League clash with Besitkas on Thursday
Steven Gerrard will not be fit for Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Besiktas at Anfield on Thursday, Brendan Rodgers has revealed.
The Reds captain has been sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered during the Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur last week and sat out the FA Cup victory at Crystal Palace at the weekend.
And the Liverpool boss revealed that the Merseyside club’s medical team will continue to assess the veteran midfielder’s condition in the build-up to this weekend’s Premier League clash at Southampton.
Speaking at a news conference at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground on Wednesday afternoon, Rodgers said: “He [Gerrard] won’t have a chance for tomorrow and we just need to assess on a daily basis where Steven is at.”
The Northern Irishman also said that Liverpool “accepted” Uefa’s decision to ban Lazar Markovic for four games following his red card during the Champions League group stage.
Markovic was sent off during the 1-1 draw against Basel back in December.
“We accept the ban and unfortunately he will have to serve that. He obviously won’t be able to contribute for these coming games,” said Rodgers.
“But in the future he’ll hopefully be able to play many more European games for the club.”
Liverpool are currently in seventh place in the Premier League table, 17 points behind leaders Chelsea.
