Rodgers gives latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Tottenham game
Brendan Rodgers says Lucas Leiva is set for a spell on the sidelines
Lucas Leiva is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury during Saturday’s Merseyside derby, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.
The Brazil international last just 16 minutes of the Goodison Park clash before Joe Allen replaced the 27-year-old midfielder.
Speaking to his pre-match media conference on Monday ahead of the visit of Tottenham Hotspur, Rodgers gave an update on Lucas’ fitness.
“Lucas is one that will probably miss a little bit of time. We’re just waiting on the exact results of the scan,” Rodgers said.
“All the others should be fine.”
The former Napoli target has been a key factor behind Liverpool’s eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League after he was restored to the line-up in December.
England international Daniel Sturridge was a second-half substitute – again, as Liverpool played out a goalless draw with their bitter rivals.
Asked if Sturridge could make his first start following his return from five month injury lay-off, Rodgers replied: “You’ll see tomorrow night.
“He’s in a condition where he has been training for a little bit of time. There’ll be a time where he will be able to start, whether it’s tomorrow or whether it’s at the weekend, you’ll have to wait and see.”
Liverpool, who are four points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, were 3-0 winners against Spurs at White Hart Lane in August.
Sturridge, 25, hasn’t started a Premier League game since Liverpool’s resounding triumph in north London.
