Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer have ruled themselves out of Switzerland’s Davis Cup first round tie against Belgium next month.

The Swiss duo memorably led their country to victory in last year’s tournament but have both opted not to play in the first-round clash.

Wawrinka, who is through to the semi-finals in Rotterdam this week, explained his decision in an official statement on Friday.

“After many weeks of consideration I regret to announce that I will not play this tie, ” said world No8 Wawrinka. “After being a member of the team for over 11 years I decided for the first time in my career to not play a Davis Cup tie.

“It is always a total honour for me to play for Switzerland and I was happy to be part of the unbelievable team, who won the Davis Cup in 2014.

“2014 was a very intense and long year full of emotions and fantastic moments. After many years on tour I had to take this difficult decision due to my busy playing schedule in the upcoming weeks.

“This decision is for the first round only and I will reassess at a later stage when I will return to the team.”
