Peter Schmeichel says Manchester United will send out a big message to their rivals if the club tie down David de Gea to a long-term contract.

Spain international De Gea has been in brilliant form this season, amassing seven clean sheets and averaging 2.31 saves per game.

However, the Spain international’s silence over a potential new contract has fuelled speculation of a summer move to Real Madrid.

“It is very important that the best players stay at Manchester United. It gives the right signal to everybody else that they believe in the project and that this club will go back to the top of Premier League and European football,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports News.

“If he signs a new contract that is a very big signal United are sending out. Fingers crossed he signs a new five-year contract.”

The Spanish goalkeeper joined United in 2011 as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar, who retired at the age of 40.

De Gea has made 158 appearances for United after the English club paid £17.8m to sign De Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011, which remains a British record fee for a goalkeeper.

His reputation has grown steadily in the last 18 months, but Spanish football expert Guillem Balague expects the 24-year-old to extend his stay at United despite interest from Madrid.

“He is negotiating a new deal with Manchester United and that seems to be the priority now,” Balague told Sky Sports.

“So I think he will sign a new contract and become the best-paid goalkeeper in the world, ahead of [Madrid’s Iker] Casillas perhaps.”
