Six Nations 2015: England’s David Wilson out of Wales game

England forwards coach Graham Rowntree confirms Bath tighthead prop has failed to recover from a neck problem

David Wilson is the latest England international to be ruled out of their Six Nations opener with Wales on Friday.

The 29-year-old Bath Rugby tighthead prop, who started all four of England’s QBE Internationals in November, has a neck injury.

We’re hoping David will be in the mix for next week, but he’s not right at the moment unfortunately.

It is a further blow to Stuart Lancaster’s preparations ahead of the crunch Cardiff clash, but 45-times capped Leicester Tigers prop Dan Cole has been declared fit by forwards coach Graham Rowntree.

While England are dealing with a large numbers of injuries, Wales have a clean bill of health prompting head coach Warren Gatland to lay down the gauntlet by naming his team for the match 48 hours ahead of schedule.

“David Wilson won’t be ready for Friday,” Rowntree said.

“He’s not recovered from the nerve impingement.”

England also have Newcastle Falcons’ Kieran Brookes and Bath Rugby’s Henry Thomas available, but Cole is expected to get the nod to make his first appearance since starting England’s 20-0 Calcutta Cup win over Scotland at BT Murrayfield last February.

Cole, who toured Australia with the British and Irish Lions in 2013, has been out action for five weeks after spraining a foot in Leicester’s 32-30 Aviva Premiership win over Sale.

But Rowntree confirmed that the Leicester forward has had four full days of training under his belt at England’s camp in Surrey.

“We’re hoping David will be in the mix for next week, but he’s not right at the moment unfortunately,” he added.

“Dan is available and has progressed well. He trained with us all last week.

“We increased his rehabilitation and he’s trained fully for the last four days.

“Dan is a class, proven operator. He’s not been out for six months and has not been sat twiddling his thumbs for the last six weeks.

“We’ve trained pretty fast and he’s slotted in nicely.”

Northampton Saints flanker Tom Wood, Tigers lock Geoff Parling and centres Brad Barritt and Kyle Eastmond are also expected to miss the Wales game, but remain with the squad with a view to taking part later in the tournament.

But Saracens outside-half Owen Farrell has had surgery on a medial knee problem, which could keep him out until April.

England’s growing injury list:

Forwards: Joe Launchbury (neck), Courtney Lawes (ankle), Geoff Parling (knee), Ed Slater (knee), Tom Wood (ankle), Ben Morgan (leg), David Wilson (neck).

Backs: Ben Foden (knee), Manu Tuilagi (groin), Kyle Eastmond (shoulder), Brad Barritt (knee), Owen Farrell (knee).
