Six Nations 2015: Jonathan Joseph is a real leader for England, says Stuart Lancaster
England head coach praises the impact of Bath centre Jonathan Joseph after two tries in a 47-17 victory over Italy
Jonathan Joseph has grown into a leader within the England ranks since fighting his way into the line-up, according to Stuart Lancaster.
Lancaster was speaking after two tries from the Bath centre had led the Red Rose to a 47-17 victory over Italy at Twickenham.
And the national team’s head coach explained that Joseph had earned his place in the side through his consistent level of performance at domestic level.
“As the season has gone on, his case for inclusion has become overwhelming, really, from his club form,” said Lancaster.
“There were areas where we felt he needed to develop – his defence and his management of wide breakdowns, things like that – and they have really come on.
“His confidence as well, his presence – he has shown himself as a real leader in our team, which is fantastic, and I think that’s grown on the back of good work done at Bath.”
England backs coach Mike Catt added his voice to the praise for Joseph.
“We have always known he had it in him,” said Catt.
“He has now done it on a consistent basis, so all credit to him. He has taken his chance, and he has taken it well.”
