Southampton 0 Liverpool 2: Player ratings as Coutinho sparkles

Player ratings from a rain-soaked St Mary's as Liverpool edge closer to the top four in the Premier League

By Sid Selant

Southampton

Fraser Forster Had a quiet afternoon as he was hardly tested. Two shots on goal and two goals conceded. 5/10

Nathaniel Clyne Consistent performance by the right-back. Defended well and attacked down the flanks when the opportunity arose. 5

Jose Fonte Not much to defend. Formed a good partnership with Yoshida. 5

Maya Yoshida Same as Fonte, not really troubled and rarely put a foot wrong. 5

Matt Targett Not troubled at the back but slipped at the vital moment as he attempted to clear ball which led to Sterling scoring. 4

James Ward-Prowse Ran the midfield but couldn’t find any killer passes to set his strikers up. Replaced by Mane on 56 minutes. 6

Victor Wanyama The Kenya international did a great job dropping deep and protecting his defence. Ventured forward as much as he could to link up play. 5

Steven Davis Not an effective first half. Replaced at the break. 4

Filip Djuricic Apart from the penalty claim in the first minute, not a great performance. 4

Graziano Pelle Having a bit of a baron spell as he has failed to score in his last nine Premier League games. Lacking that cutting edge. 4

Eljero Elia Dutch player on loan from Werder Bremen had a good chance to equalise late in the first half. Used his pace well. 5

Substitutes

Morgan Schneiderlin Not as influential as he has been in previous games. Failed to control proceedings. 4

Sadio Mane N/A

Dusan Tadic N/A

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet The busier of the two ‘keepers and kept his team in the game with a few fine saves. 6

Emre Can Survived an early penalty appeal against him but did his job well at the back. 6

Martin Skrtel Kept the Saints’ attacks at bay. Disciplined performance, though not tested enough. 7

Dejan Lovren Former Saints centre-half had a few nervous moments but played well alongside Skrtel. Cautioned in the first half for scything down Ward-Prowse. 6

Jordon Ibe The 19-year-old is getting stronger game by game and ran at the Saints defence endless times. Replaced on 75 minutes. 6

Jordan Henderson Was full of energy and broke up play in the middle. Decent performance. 6

Joe Allen Alongside Henderson played it simple and assisted his back line. 5

Lazar Markovic The Serbian winger was not influential and was replaced at half-time. 4

Adam Lallana The former Saints hero did not have a particularly good game. Assisted more helping Coutinho in midfield then going forward. 4

Raheem Sterling The English starlet was restored to the starting line-up. Linked up well with Coutinho in the first half without any success. Grabbed Liverpool’s second goal with a neat finish from inside the box. 6

Philippe Coutinho (man of the match) Stunning strike from 30 yards to stun the hosts. Always at the forefront of all Liverpool attacks. Excellent game. 8

Substitutes

Daniel Sturridge Clocking up the minutes to regain full match fitness. 4

Alberto Moreno Comfortable afternoon filling in for Markovic. 5
