Three defenders Arsenal could sign this summer

Gregor Vasconcelos takes a look at three defenders Arsenal could move to sign this summer

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels could be on his way out of Borussia Dortmund this summer and many are bound to come sniffing for his services. The 26-year-old is already club captain and a World Cup winner and thus would bring a vast amount of experience to Arsenal’s rear-guard. It also helps that he is German, which seems to be the new preferred nationality at The Emirates these days. Hummels is a dream of a defender. A lion, a leader and technically adept on the ball, he would suit Arsenal perfectly. The Gunners might find it difficult to secure his services though, with a £37m price-tag attached to him and seemingly every top club in Europe in the race for his signature. It would be one hell of a coup if Wenger manage to pull this one off.

Fabian Schar

Heavily linked with the Gunners in January, Fabian Schar could make that switch a reality in June when his contract with Basel runs out. With Per Mertesacker approaching the twilight of his career, the Switzerland international could provide a like-for-like replacement as both possess similar strengths. Schar has a good reading of the game and is always quick to sniff out danger. He is also comfortable on the ball and his technical ability suit the type of game that Arsenal want to play. He may not be quite as tall as the German, but makes up for the difference in his more aggressive approach to heading. He first caught the English eye with two excellent displays against Chelsea last year, something that few Arsenal defenders have managed recently.

Toby Alderweireld

The Belgian has impressed massively at St. Mary’s, where he is spending a year on loan from Atletico Madrid. A product of Ajax’s famous youth academy, Toby Alderweireld’s technique is as good that of central-defenders come. Southampton have the first option to buy and it’s unlikely that they won’t activate it after the player was a vital part of the side before his injury. Contractual complications however, mean that Atletico can cancel that clause and sell him to the highest bidder. Arsenal have been linked for a while and now might be the perfect time to secure the player’s services. He is 25 and already has a season of Premier League experience. Aside from being a quality central defender, he can also do a job at right-back and defensive mid, the latter being another position in which Arsenal desperately needs reinforcements.
