Tottenham Hotspur haven’t seen the best of Erik Lamela, according to Ossie Ardiles.

The 22-year-old playmaker has improved under his fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino after a disappointing first season at White Hart Lane following his move in 2013.

He has the right mentality to shine in this kind of game

Lamela has scored one goal and has made five assists in 23 Premier League appearances this term, as well as netting three times in Europa League and League Cup.

Speaking to London24 ahead of Sunday’s Capital One Cup final at Wembley, Ardiles backed his compatriot to shine in the showpiece against rivals Chelsea.

“Certainly this would be the right time to see the best of him,” Ardiles said.

“He has the right mentality to shine in this kind of game and to show what he can do. He had a very difficult time in his first year, this year he has shown a lot of signs of improvement.

“He is starting to understand the pace of English football and because of that he has been better – but he can do much better, he is hugely talented for his age and the best of him is yet to come. We have not seen the best of his so far but Sunday is a chance for him to really hit those sort of levels.”

Lamela completed a club-record £30.75m move to Tottenham from Roma in 2013, but the South American has struggled to replicate his Serie A performances in the English top-flight.

The Argentina international scored 19 goals in 62 games in the Italian top division over two seasons, prompting Tottenham to spend a large chunk of the funds generated from Gareth Bale’s sale on Lamela.
