Gary Neville says Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney’s best position is a striker and not a midfielder.

The 29-year-old England international has been largely deployed in a deeper role in Louis van Gaal’s side in recent months.

While Rooney was asked to add creativity to United’s midfield, the forward managed to score just one goal in 2015.

Van Gaal switched Rooney to his traditional striker position for their 2-1 loss to Swansea, and former United defender Neville welcomed the change.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Red Devils legend said: “I don’t think midfield is Wayne Rooney’s best position.

“I think what happened at Man United earlier on in the season was he was put there out of necessity because of injuries and he’s ended up staying there.

“Now he seems to have gone back [to being a forward] and I certainly think he’s better up top.”

Rooney was named as United’s captain following Nemanja Vidic’s move to Inter Milan from the 20-time English champions last summer.

The Red Devils skipper has scored a reasonable eight goals and has made four assists in 22 top-flight games.
