Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Boro clash
Aaron Ramsey is ruled out for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature in FA Cup clash
Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of Arsenal’s FA Cup fifth-round clash with Middlesbrough on Sunday with a hamstring injury.
The midfielder lasted just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute during the 2-1 win over Leicester City at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Arsene Wenger also revealed that forward Alexis Sanchez is also likely to miss out after the Chile international suffered a knee injury during the midweek victory in north London.
“Aaron Ramsey will be out. He has a little hamstring strain,” Wenger told his pre-match news conference at Arsenal’s training ground on Friday morning.
“He is a guy who’s serious and works hard. There is no obvious reason why he should have muscular problems. [But] it’s not a major injury, it’s a grade one.
“Alexis Sanchez is still not able to go out [to training], he could be short for Sunday.”
Wenger confirmed that midfielder Jack Wilshere, who returned to full training this week after undergoing ankle surgery in December, could feature against Boro.
However, the Arsenal boss concedes that it will take some time for the 23-year-old to return to full fitness after his four-month spell on the sidelines.
“Wilshere is back in normal training but has been out for four months and lacks competition,” said Wenger. “It will take him a while to get back to a competitive level.
“He’s motivated and focused to come back as quickly as possible. He’s been out for four months. Competition gives you that sharpness that training cannot give you.”
Arsenal travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on 21 February before the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with AS Monaco four days later.
