West Ham 1 Man United 1: Player ratings

Player ratings as West Ham defender James Tomkins impresses against Manchester United

West Ham United

Adrián Commanded the defence well and proved a match for the shots that came his way. 7/10

Carl Jenkinson Nullified the threat of the United left-side. A standout performance by the Arsenal loanee. 7

Cheikhou Kouyate The midfielder covered at centre-half and he didn’t look out-of-place. Showed composure and skill that matched a world-class forward when taking his goal. 8

James Tomkins (man of the match) A solid performance from the big centre-half. Had Falcao and Van Persie in his back pocket for the entire game. 9

Aaron Cresswell Reliable defensively and got forward and linked well with the West Ham’s attacks. 7

Alex Song A shaky start almost gifted Van Persie a goal in the opening five minutes. A decent showing. 6

Mark Noble A tireless performance by the energetic midfielder. Never stopped running and was efficient on the ball. 6

Kevin Nolan A good performance by the tenacious midfielder. Was often behind the Hammers’ best attacks. 7

Stewart Downing Always looking to get a cross in and tested Valencia’s defending. Seemed to disappear as the game dragged on, though. 6

Enner Valencia Constantly made aggressive runs in the channels, causing United’s back four trouble. 7

Diafra Sakho – Gave United a headache with his pace on the counter-attack. 7

Substitutes

Matt Jarvis Failed to have an impact. 5

Manchester United

David De Gea Made two acrobatic saves to deny Valencia. Saved well with his legs to keep out Tomkins. Let down by lacklustre defending throughout the game. Not at fault for the goal. 7

Antonio Valencia Solid throughout the game. Good defensively. His final ball leaves a bit to be desired, though. 7

Phil Jones Solid but not spectacular. Hasn’t looked comfortable alongside Rojo. Van Gaal needs to find his perfect centre-half partnership. 6

Marcos Rojo Struggled to deal with the pace and dynamism of West Ham’s front two. Lost Tomkins and nearly gifted the Hammers a goal. 5

Luke Shaw Rarely got forward but when he did venture up field his end product was lacking. Was unfortunate to be sent off after two yellow cards late on. 5

Daley Blind Scored United’s late goal with a well-taken volley. He lacked the attributes of a holding midfielder in this game: fight, strength and protection of the defence. 6

Wayne Rooney Looked lost out on the right-wing. Grew frustrated with his performance and the performances of his team-mates. Came into the game when moved more centrally. 6

Adnan Januzaj Almost like a passenger at times. Seems to be trying too much to impress, carelessly giving possession away. 5

Angel Di Maria Still yet to find his feet in a United shirt. Looked a shadow of the Galactico that he was last season. 5

Radamel Falcao One of his worst performances as a Red Devil. Lacked any movement, pace or the desire that made him one of the Europe’s hottest properties. 4

Robin van Persie Held up the ball well but lacked the sharpness to put away some of the opportunities that were presented to him. 6

Substitutes

Marouane Fellaini Changed the dynamic of the game with his aerial ability. 6

Chris Smalling Failed to make an impact. 5
