Liverpool legend John Aldridge says the Reds must beat Arsenal to boost their top-four prospects

Liverpool are capable of beating an Arsenal side that isn’t as strong as Gunners teams of recent years, according to John Aldridge.

The north London side are six points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

The Reds saw their 13-game unbeaten run come to an end before the international break after a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield.

Former Liverpool striker Aldridge believes Brendan Rodgers’ side need to go for three points at The Emirates to have a chance of finishing in the top four.

“Back to business for Liverpool on Saturday, and they simply have to get a result at Arsenal,” Aldridge told Liverpool Echo.

“In normal circumstances, you’d say a point at the Emirates is a decent return, but with Manchester United at home to Aston Villa, you have to expect they’ll pick up three points, and if we don’t win, a gap of seven or eight points would surely be too big.

“It’s not going to be easy, Arsenal are not a bad side at all and they do well at home. But Monaco showed they can be beaten, and I don’t think this Gunners team is as strong as some of the recent ones.

“I don’t think it’s a great league in general, to be honest. Liverpool have got to go there to win. They’re capable of it.”

Liverpool had the chance to leapfrog United and move into fourth place earlier this month but Juan Mata’s brace helped the Red Devils seal a famous win at Anfield.

The Reds drew 2-2 with Saturday’s opponents Arsenal in the Premier League in December at Anfield after Martin Skrtel scored a last-gasp equaliser for the Merseyside outfit.
