Arsene Wenger refused to be drawn into discussing potential summer recruits for Arsenal as the north London side gear up for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United.

The Gunners head into Saturday’s trip to St James’ Park on the back of their disappointing Champions League exit at the hands of Monaco on Tuesday night.

Questions have inevitably been raised about the strength of Arsenal’s squad in key areas after their fifth successive Champions League exit at the last-16 stage.

However, when asked about potential summer transfer targets as Emirates Stadium, Wenger insisted that he is not thinking about any new recruits at the moment.

“We are not in a transfer period. We just have to continue to focus,” Wenger told a news conference on Thursday morning.

“Ninety-five per cent of the players will still be here next season, and what is important is the attitude of these 95 per cent of the players – and how much we improve and how much we can push on now until the end of the season.

“We are in the semi-final of the FA Cup, we are in a strong fight in the Premier League. It’s important to focus on these targets and that we do that straight away on Saturday.”

Arsenal are currently third in the Premier League table and just a point behind second-placed Manchester City heading into the final nine games of the season.

The north London side are in good form domestically, having won eight of their last 10 Premier League games.
