Arsenal transfers: Chris Smalling wants Man United stay
Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is happy to stay at Old Trafford
Chris Smalling has underlined his desire to stay at Manchester United despite reported interest from Arsenal.
The Red Devils defender is yet to open talks with the 20-time English champions over a new deal and his current contract his set to expire at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, prompting Arsenal’s interest.
Smalling has been a first-team regular under Louis van Gaal this season, although the 25-year-old has been partnered with Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Marcos Rojo at various points of the campaign.
The United defender reiterated that he is happy to stay with the Red Devils as long as he is a regular fixture in Van Gaal’s starting line-up.
“The manager has shown a lot of faith in me, especially over these last couple of months. I’ve stayed fit and the manager has chosen me. I’m enjoying my football,” Smalling told reporters at his media conference on Sunday.
“The manager has shown his faith in me and if I’m playing, I’m happy. I’m happy to stay for as long as they want me.”
Smalling has scored three goals in 18 Premier League appearances this season.
The Red Devils are five points clear in fourth place in the table thanks to a 2-1 win against rivals Liverpool last weekend.
