Barcelona 1 Man City 0: Player ratings

Player rating as Barcelona seal a 3-1 aggregate win against Manchester City

By Tom Wellman

Marc Andre ter-Stegen Brilliant and timely penalty save but looked unsteady, surely due to a lack of match practice having not featured in the league this season. 7/10

Dani Alves A booking that rules him out of the next game blotted his performance. Dealt with City’s left hand side easily. 7

Gerard Pique Tidied up neatly, though was culpable for conceding the penalty. Reprieved by his keeper but continues as Barca’s primary centre-back. 6

Jeremy Mathieu Brought in to deal with City aerially, though had little action to deal with from set-pieces. 7

Jordi Alba Bombed forwards though was lucky to be reprieved by Navas’ poor distribution. 7

Ivan Rakitic Precise touch and finish for the opening goal, Rakitic moved Barca forwards from the back when Messi was up the pitch. 7

Javier Mascherano Showed he’s adept in midfield and filled in neatly for Busquets. Kept international colleague Aguero quiet. 7

Andres Iniesta The little magician had minimal impact in the game’s flashpoints but demonstrated his quality with some delicate link-up play. 6

Lionel Messi Put in a performance that could be ranked as one of the best opening 45 minute displays of all time, Messi left a trail of gold dust in his wake. No City player got close to him on a night when he truly sparkled. Only missing a goal from a near-perfect display. 8
Luis Suarez: Unlike the first leg, Suarez was unable to make the most of several decent openings. Looked a figure of frustration like his early Barca days. 6

Neymar Enjoyed the freedom of the left hand side against Sagna. Linked up well with both Messi and Suarez and tormented Nasri all evening, though failed to put the game to bed. 7

Manchester City

Joe Hart (Man of the match) Kept City alive in the tie single-handedly. Spread himself in his trademark manner and helped thwart Messi (four times!), Neymar, Suarez and Alba. Came out with plenty of credit in a man of the match display. 10

Bacary Sagna Lost his first one-on-one with Neymar and struggled against Alba and the Brazilian all night. Didn’t pose a threat going forwards. 5

Vincent Kompany The Belgian’s stock is gradually slipping, proving there’s a massive gulf between himself and star quality. Loitered in possession and lost Barca’s forwards several times. 4

Martin Demichelis Like Kompany, was unable to handle the front three. Pulled everywhere at times and has his keeper to thank that City didn’t concede more. 5

Aleksandar Kolarov Early booking quelled his impact and therefore found it tough to stop Barca in full flow. 5

Samir Nasri Provided another reason for football purists to dislike him with a wild hack at Neymar, who had the edge on the Frenchman all night. Subbed off before the restart. 2

Yaya Toure Failed to give an emphatic showing on his return to the Nou Camp and City’s Champions League squad. Wouldn’t get into the Barca squad. 6

Fernandinho Has anyone filed a missing persons report? Fernandinho was nowhere to be seen, apart from when he was nutmegged and booked. Couldn’t get within a yard of Barca. Improved after the break. 5

James Milner Biggest impact was to be nutmegged by Messi, a moment replayed several times just to remind us the Englishman remained on the pitch. Tried hard with minimal success. 5

David Silva Failed to assist Aguero in a thankless role. His nimble footwork made City look dangerous when in possession, though failed to provide anything to impact the result. 6

Sergio Aguero Apart from a naff penalty, provided City’s only threat all night but wasn’t fed with suitable service. Chased and harried with minimal success, winning the penalty and causing trouble. 7

Jesus Navas One moment of real quality when he bombed past Alba but his final pass to Aguero was awry. 7

Wilfried Bony Came on and caused few problems at a time when Barca had license to keep the ball. 90 minutes of bullish battery would have been interesting to see. 5
