Rodgers’ watched his Liverpool side seal a 1-0 win at Swansea City on Monday night as they kept their bid for Champions League qualification on track.
The Reds are currently fifth in the Premier League but just two points behind fourth-placed United heading into the final nine games of the season.
And the Northern Irishman feels that his side are in good shape as they prepare to welcome Louis van Gaal’s side to Anfield this weekend.
“It’s step by step,” said Rodgers, speaking to Liverpool’s website.
“It was always going to be a process for us. We were so far behind and to be looking to make up the points was just going to take time.
“But we’ve put ourselves in a really good position now with nine games to go; the consistency and confidence of the team is really high.”
Liverpool are in fine form domestically, after having won eight of their last 10 Premier League games. The Reds are also the only team to be unbeaten in the Premier League since the turn of the year.
Rodgers’ side are also hoping to reach the FA Cup semi-finals when they take on Blackburn Rovers in their quarter-final replay on 8 April.
