Chelsea were unable to fully capitalise on Manchester City’s shock defeat at Turf Moor after Southampton held the Premier League leaders to a 1-1 draw.

Spain international Diego Costa scored his first goal in eight games to break the deadlock at Stamford Bridge before Dusan Tadic levelled from the penalty spot to seal a point for the visitors.

Here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to an open encounter in west London on Sunday.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) reckons the Blues are unlucky to concede a first-half spot-kick: “Not a pen for me that. Good tackle by Matic.”

Former Chelsea forward Vladimir Weiss (@VladiW7) sympathises with Jose Muurinho’s side: “Never a pen #chesou”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) agrees with Mourinho’s decision to withdraw Nemanja Matic after a difficult game: “Good decision by Jose taking Matic off lucky to still be on the pitch. Southampton team never put enough pressure on Mike Dean!!”

Republic of Ireland international Noel Hunt (@boyhunt) isn’t impressed with the referee’s all-round performance: “C Nicolas saying Mike Dean did Matic a favour by not sending him off! He’s not there to do favours he there to Ref a game fairly!!#Poorform!”

Manchester United legend Philip Neville (@fizzer18) heaps praise on Chelsea’s dimunitive Belgian: “Hazard is brilliant!”

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) could be forgiven for thinking he is watching the FA Cup: “This is really end to end stuff. #CFCSOU #mmlove #CFC”

Retired Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) names Eden Hazard as the Premier League’s best player: “Hazard easily the best player in the PL this season. Attack vs defence. Saints hanging on. For now ….”

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster (@BenFoster) heaps praise on another England shot stopper: “Big @FraserForster on absolute”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid) is impressed with the Southampton goalkeeper: “Forster been very good”

Saints legend Claus Lundekvam (@SaintSkipper5) is willing to concede the visitors were a tad fortunate in the closing stages of the game: “Great game at SB, OK abit Lucky second half but great point. Super Saints”

Finally, Southampton great Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) hails England international Forster: “Excellent MOM performance from @FraserForster”
