Chelsea 2 PSG 2: Player ratings as David Luiz makes winning return

Player ratings as 10-man Paris Saint-Germain deservedly knock Chelsea out of the Champions League

By Jens Raitanen

Thibaut Courtois Dealt well with most of the chances that PSG created. Produced an excellent save in extra-time to deny Thiago Silva but he could do nothing to stop the Brazilian’s header moments after. 7/10

Branislav Ivanovic Solid all-round performance from the right-back but he was nearly punished when Cavani escaped and got in behind him before hitting the post. 7

Gary Cahill Scored Chelsea’s first goal with a great strike from inside the box. He was solid at the back up until Luiz scored. From then on he looked much less comfortable in defence. 7

John Terry Coped well with the majority of PSG’s threat up front but he should have dealt with Luiz before the Brazilian levelled the match. 7

Cesar Azpilicueta He did well at the back for most of the match but he was relatively quiet when on the attack. 7

Nemanja Matic Did his part in midfield with some solid tackling and defending but was sometimes caught out by the pace and technique of Verratti and Matuidi. 6

Cesc Fabregas His brilliant passing caught a few PSG players by surprise at times. He was always a threat when going forward. 7

Ramires Struggled to cope with Verratti and Matuidi on occasions. He was caught out a few times on the counter attack. 6

Oscar Threatened the opposition occasionally when going forward before being substituted at half-time. However, he contributed to the sending off of Ibrahomivic by play-acting. 6

Eden Hazard He troubled PSG down the flanks in the first half but he looked flat from the second half onwards, despite netting his penalty. 7

Diego Costa Troubled the PSG defence at times with his runs and he should have won a penalty for his side when he was brought down by Cavani. However he struggled to get away from his markers during the entire match. 6

Willian Looked a threat every time he was running down the flanks. He nearly put his side in front when his free-kick was tipped wide by Sirigu. 7

Didier Drogba Came on at the start of extra-time but did not have much of an impact. 5

Paris Saint-Germain

Salvatore Sirigu Stood no chance of saving Cahill’s strike that gave Chelsea the lead. He did well to save a free-kick from Willian and Ramires’ shot before the goal. 7

Marquinhos Struggled to deal with the pace and trickery of Hazard at first but he eventually grew into the game and managed to keep his Belgian opponent quiet for the remainder of the match. It was a solid performance from a centre-back playing on the right-hand side. 8

Thiago Silva Great defending from the Brazilian for most of the match apart from when he handled the ball inside the box in extra-time. However, he made up for it when he leveled it for PSG with a fantastic header. 8

David Luiz He wasn’t sharp at all times at the back and he allowed Chelsea’s forward players to get away from him too often. He could have been sent off in the first half when he appeared to have elbowed Costa. But he scored a brilliant and vital goal late in the second half to level the tie. 7

Maxwell Solid defensive performance and also threatened every time he was on the attack. 8

Marco Verratti (man of the match) Looked dangerous every time he pushed forward. Chelsea’s midfield struggled to cope with his technique and pace every time he was involved in a PSG counter attack. Verratti was definitely the best player on the pitch. 9

Thiago Motta Good defensive effort from the Italian in midfield. He did well to protect the back four and help start PSG’s counter attacks. 7

Blaise Matuidi Another excellent showing from the Frenchman. His link-up play with Verratti was terrific and he was constantly threatening the opposition with his runs behind and around the Chelsea back four. 8

Javier Pastore Not his best performance as he struggled to beat opponents on several occasions. He was tightly marked for the entire match. 6

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Was wrongly sent off in the first half for a challenge on Oscar who made a real show of it. Before that, he had hardly contributed, as he was barely involved in the game. 6

Edinson Cavani Threatened the Chelsea back four on occasions but he nearly gave away a penalty after bringing down Costa in the box towards the end of the first half. He should have put PSG in front in the second half when he hit the post after rounding Courtois. Despite his presence up front, he struggled to cope with Chelsea’s defenders. 6

Ezequiel Lavezzi Had an immediate impact after coming on in the second half but he faded away shortly after Luiz scored. 6

Adrien Rabiot Brought on in the second half and hassled really well during his time on the pitch. 7
