Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0: Player ratings from League Cup final

Player ratings from Wembley as Jose Mourinho wins his first trophy in his second spell at Chelsea

By Sid Selant

Chelsea

Petr Cech Surprise starter instead of Courtois. Spurs’ attackers never really tested the Chelsea shot-stopper. 6/10

Branislav Ivanovic Comfortable afternoon for the Serbian. Always an attacking threat. 6

Kurt Zouma A risk playing Zouma in front of the back four. The 20-year-old French international held his own and kept Eriksen at bay. Broke up Spurs’ attacks. 7

John Terry (man of the match) Chelsea Talisman on hands to finish from close range with a low shot just before the break. Got stuck in and put his body on the line when it mattered. 8

Cesar Azpilicueta – Kept the Spurs wingers at bay and pushed forward on occasions. Sustained a head injury in the latter part of the game. 6

Ramires Big job to deputise for the suspended Matic and will be happy with his performance. 5

Gary Cahill Solid performance at the back and gave Spurs problems from set pieces. Rarely put a foot wrong. 7

Cesc Fabregas The Spaniard had an influential game in the middle of the park. Almost scored with an acrobat kick. 6

Willian Reasonably satisfactory performance, not much to do and didn’t make enough runs. 5

Diego Costa Scored his first Wembley goal albeit via a deflection. Gave the Spurs defence a tough time with his pace and power 6

Eden Hazard Did not influence the game much and drifted in and out of the match. Quiet afternoon. 6

Tottenham

Hugo Lloris Not at fault for the two goals and made a decent save from a Cahill header just before the break. 5

Kyle Walker Started brightly making some good runs down the right. Injury dampened his performance in the second half. 4

Eric Dier Booked early on in the game for a foul on Costa but kept his composure for the rest of the game, although some might argue that he should have seen a second yellow just before the break for another foul on Costa. 5

Jan Vertonghen The Belgian was troubled a few times by the counter attacks of Chelsea and couldn’t help the deflection that led to the first goal. 5

Danny Rose Rose gave Spurs some width down the right with some good runs but the final delivery was poor. Jumped in many times with careless tackles and caught out of position when tracking back. 5

Nabil Bentaleb The young Algerian is forming a good partnership with Mason but still lacks the cutting edge. Time is off the essence to gain experience. 5

Ryan Mason The youngster hustled in the midfield and combined well with Bentaleb. However, needs to improve on shooting as he had a couple of chances but shot way off target. 5

Nacer Chadli Careless tackle just before the break which led to a free-kick from which Chelsea scored. Former FC Twente player not a patch on the player that convinced Spurs to splash the cash. 4

Christian Eriksen Hit the woodwork from a free-kick but could not inspire his team to a Wembley win. Ran out of ideas and didn’t have enough support. 5

Andros Townsend Started off brightly with a couple of good runs but faded away as the game went on. His recent performances have not been impressive. 4

Harry Kane Marshalled well by Cahill and Terry and wasn’t given any opportunities to punish Chelsea. The in-form forward had a great run in the first half but never got any supply in the box. 5

Substitutes:

Mousa Dembele Didn’t contribute much when he came on. 4

Erik Lamela Didn’t have the time to inspire his team. 4

Roberto Soldado N/A
