Mike Coman has signed a new one-year deal with Edinburgh Rugby keeping him in the Scottish capital until the end of the 205/16 season.

The 27-year-old New Zealand-born forward has become an increasingly key figure at the club since joining on a two-year deal in 2013 from Napier-based ITM Cup club Hawke’s Bay.

Looking ahead I just want to keep building on this season, making sure we’re consistently a top six team and that we keep improving.

Edinburgh captain Mike Coman on their future

After a spell captaining the side during the 2013/14 season while scrum-half Greig Laidlaw was injured or on Scotland duties, Coman took over the role permanently at the start of the 2014/15 season when Laidlaw joined Gloucester and has gone on to make 28 appearances for the club.

Coman led the Gunners to a surprise 1872 Cup victory over their Scottish rivals Glasgow Warriors in January and later that month helped secure a European Challenge Cup quarter-final date with London Irish in April with a bonus-point win over Bordeaux-Begles at BT Murrayfield.

A bonus-point win at Benetton Treviso last Saturday saw the Gunners climb to within four points of the coveted top six place that would give them a place in next season’s European Champions Cup.

Reflecting on Edinburgh’s season to date, Coman admitted that the side is starting to come together after surviving an injury-hit end to 2014.

“We had a bit of a slow start to the season but the team’s coming together really well and results are coming over time,” he said.

“The boys are working hard and the systems are coming together.

“The highpoint of this season for me has definitely been winning the 1872 Cup and progressing in Europe.

“Looking ahead I just want to keep building on this season; making sure we’re consistently a top six team, and that we keep improving.”

Edinburgh return to PRO12 action on Saturday 28 March when they travel to Llanelli to take on the Scarlets.
