The Dutchman wrapped up a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory in one hour and 48 minutes to reach the third round after knocking out the two-time Indian Wells quarter-finalist.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer eased into the third round with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman as the Swiss continues his bid for a record fifth title at the tournament.
“I think I did very well,” said Federer, who will next face Italy’s Andreas Seppi. “It was a bit breezy and you had to be careful at times but it’s good to get a first win.
“It was important to get off to a good start. I just tried to stay focused and stay aggressive on returns, although that’s not always easy.”
Elsewhere, three-time champion Rafael Nadal is also through after a 6-4 6-2 win over Dutchman Igor Sijsling in just 72 minutes.
