Jamie Carragher has joked that he has been ignoring Steven Gerrard’s calls after the Liverpool legend claimed the Reds captain should start from the bench against Manchester United.

The 34-year-old midfielder is set to face the Red Devils for the last time on Sunday afternoon as a Liverpool player ahead of his switch to Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

Gerrard made his return from a hamstring injury on Monday night as the Liverpool skipper was a second-half substitute in a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Liberty Stadium.

However, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson have impressed in the Liverpool midfield over the past month or so, and Carragher doesn’t believe manager Brendan Rodgers can justify dropping the pair in favour of Gerrard.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk, Carragher said: “If I’m in Brendan Rodgers’ shoes and the fact that he has only just come back from injury. But he made a difference against Swansea in that 20-25 minutes. He has that composure and experience.

“The players who have been playing in his position have been playing so well. Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson played so well in their last big game against Manchester City. It is difficult to get all three in team and leave one of them out.”

Asked if Gerrard had spoken to Carragher since the retired Liverpool defender made the claim on Monday Night Football, Carragher replied: “I’ve been blocking his phone calls.”

Liverpool won six successive games without Gerrard after the Reds captain suffered a hamstring injury during a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in mid-February.
