Jamie Carragher believes Louis van Gaal will be able to put out his preferred Manchester United side in the coming weeks.

The Red Devils manager has been forced to contend with something of an injury crisis at Old Trafford for most of the season.

However, United’s fitness troubles have started to ease in recent weeks and the Red Devils were 3-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford last weekend.

Former Liverpool centre-half Carragher believes Van Gaal does deserve praise of guiding United back into the Premier League’s top four ahead of the Anfield clash on Sunday.

“He actually has come out and said that he has had so many injuries and players missing that he has been forced to change the team around,” Carragher told Newstalk ahead of Liverpool’s clash against United.

“In the past, he hasn’t been a coach who changes formation throughout a season. So when he gets the players back that he wants fit, you’ll start to see what Louis van Gaal really wants from the players that he has there.

“His job was to get United back in the top four regardless of how his side plays, so you have to give him credit for that, but if they don’t make it, he’ll get a lot of criticism.”

Van Gaal was named as David Moyes’ permanent successor last May, signing a three-year deal with the 20-time English champions.

United were 3-0 winners against Liverpool at Old Trafford in December courtesy of goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie.

The Red Devils can move five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool if Van Gaal’s side beat their bitter rivals on Sunday.
