Jordan Henderson believes Liverpool have many viable candidates to succeed Steven Gerrard as the club’s new permanent captain at the end of the season.

The current vice-skipper is favourite to replace the England centurion in the summer after Brendan Rodgers made the midfielder Gerrard’s second-in-command following Daniel Agger’s return to Brondby last year.

However, Henderson, who moved to Anfield from Sunderland in a £20m deal in 2011, pointed to the likes of former Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho, Slovakia international Martin Skrtel and summer signing Emre Can.

“Next season we’ll see what happens because it might not be me succeeding Stevie, it might be someone else,” Henderson told Liverpool’s website.

“There are a lot of strong leaders in the dressing room. There are a lot of big characters in the team – down to earth, humble people.

“Mama [Sakho], Emre [Can] and Skrts [Martin Skrtel] have developed a strong collective understanding. You can see their passion, they’re desperate to win, they give everything.

“Studge [Daniel Sturridge] is a big character. Lucas [Leiva] is too. I can only do the current job the best I can.”

Henderson has scored seven goals and has made four assists in 27 Premier League appearances for the 18-time English champions this season.

The Liverpool midfielder has scored against Burnley and Manchester City in his last two appearances in the Premier League.
