Jose Mourinho has accused Graeme Souness of being “envious” after the Liverpool legend criticised his Chelsea team following their Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Scot described Chelsea’s players as “pathetic” after they surrounded the referee following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s heavy tackle on Oscar at Stamford Bridge.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was also a pundit on Sky Sports alongside Souness for the Champions League last-16 second leg.

Carragher blasted the Blues for their “disgraceful” behaviour during the game as the west London side were knocked out on away goals following a 2-2 draw after extra-time on Wednesday night.

But Mourinho has now hit back at the duo, as he aimed a dig at both pundits ahead of his side’s clash with Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Mourinho said: “Jamie stopped playing a couple of years ago and in two years he forgot everything he did on the pitch.

“Mr Souness also forgot but he stopped playing quite a long time [ago], and he also forgets that a couple of years after he left Benfica I coached there. I know a lot about him.

“I learned so much about him but also a certain kind of education, not just in football but also in life. So I prefer to laugh and say that envy is the biggest tribute that the shadows give to the man.”

Mourinho’s Chelsea are currently five points clear at the top of the table.
