Wayne Rooney appeared to laugh off his latest controversy after the Manchester United captain delivered a knockout blow at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The 29-year-old appeared to be knocked unconscious by Stoke City defender Phil Bardsley in the Red Devils striker’s kitchen in a video which the Sun on Sunday published this morning.

The Potters full-back’s wife has since claimed that Rooney was acting in the video, and the striker had his own say on the incident after he scored United’s third against Spurs.

Rooney delivered a flurry of punches and fell to the turf before bouncing up to celebrate with his United team-mates. Unsurprisingly, the humorous goal celebration was a hit on Twitter, and here is The Sport Review’s pick of the social media reaction.

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is fan of the striker’s goal and celebration: “Terrific finish from @WayneRooney and a even better celebration.”

His former United team-mate Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) has clearly forgotten Craig Bellamy’s round of golf at Camp Nou: “Best celebration ever from Rooney!”

Crystal Palace midfielder James Mcarthur (@jamesmcarthur16): “Unreal celebration from Rooney #manu”

A man who knows all about humour, comedian Jack Whitehall (@jackwhitehall) loved Rooney post-goal antics: “Got to give it to rooney that was a brilliant celebration!”

Even celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) can afford himself a chuckle: “Hahahaha. #Shrek @WayneRooney #KO”

Finally, former United defender Philip Neville (@fizzer18) wants the media to forget about the story now: “Great celebration – puts an end to that story!!”
